The Pathology Screen occupies a central position in the German Mouse Clinic (GMC). The macroscopical and microscopical examinations provide the anatomical basis of the phenotypes detected in other GMC screens and facilitate the discovery of clinical-pathological correlations. The use of state of the art techniques established in human pathology is essential in the GMC pathology screen. Different tissues of mutant mice are analyzed with morphological, immunological and molecular biological methods to reveal an accurate description for disease models. Besides an extensive morphological phenotyping of mutant mice, further main goals of the Pathology Screen are the development and validation of new methods and techniques to characterize a large variety of mouse models. The Pathology Screen contributes to the identification of gene functions and the corresponding signaling cascades that influence the development of human diseases. The focus of our work is therefore the identification of novel markers for the prevention, diagnosis and possibly therapy of human diseases.
