Several explanations of increased mortality of renal failure patients, including hypertriglycerid-emia, increased lipoprotein (a) levels, increased production of oxidised low-density lipoprotein, hypertension and hyperhomocysteinemia are discussed [Brenner, 1999 #196].
In addition to these known mechanisms, still other unknown factors may contribute to the markedly increased CVD in renal failure patients. Therefore, this subproject focused on mechanisms playing a central role in renal failure-associated CVD.

This subproject is divided into four parts:

dealing with the secretome endothelial and associated cells (1.1),

post-translational modification of proteins and peptides, particular importance for CVD of renal failure patients (1.2),

the molecular phenotyping as a highly promising strategy allowing a forward genomic approach (1.3),

and testing of the functional effect of known and yet unknown mediators on the cardiovascular status of renal fail-ure patients (1.4).
