The aim of subproject 'RNomics in bacterial infections' is the identification and functional analysis of host and bacterial ncRNAs differentially transcribed upon infection with four highly relevant bacterial pathogens, i.e. Chlamydia and Neisseria. Differentially expressed ncRNAs from infected cul-tured cells and animal tissues will be identified and quantified by ultra-high parallel sequence analysis. Candidate ncRNAs with promising functions in bacterial virulence will be disturbed in cultured cells and animals, and the outcome for the infection will be monitored. Subproject II is firmly connected to the IG ‘RNomics in pathogenesis’ since (i) ultrahigh parallel sequencing is used for the unbiased identification of infection relevant ncRNAs of host and pathogen and (ii) their potential as targets for new antibacterial therapy will be evaluated.
