The research goal proposed with the grant is to identify new genes involved in the etiology of mental retardation. We will contribute to the overall research goal of the network by providing a pool of 500 clinically well-defined mentally retarded patients with unknown etiology. We will initially select 100 patients from this set to be screened by SNP-arrays by one of the partner subprojects. We will then validate the results by FISH and/or dense SNP analysis depending on the size of the deletions. These data will be pooled and be freely available to the other groups in the network. Mutation screenings will follow based on a candidate gene approach on selected cases. Detailed functional characterisation of candidate genes will help to incorporate the data into cellular networks.
