MRNET had a dedicated management to coordinate the different projects and to ensure achievement of the overall goals of the research association. The management coordinated the complementary and cooperative aspects of the work program and controlled the milestones. Quality control ensured the comparability of data. The coordinator was responsible for setting up and running of central databases and ensured their availability to date. Frequent conference calls with project leaders provided a basis for further fine-tuning. In addition, regular project meetings allowed discussing progress and new developments. An international scientific meeting organised in conjunction with the German National Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina) attracted some 200 scientists from all over the world and contributed to the visibility of the network. Many interviews were given to the media and the work of the network was covered by several newspapers including “Die Zeit” and “Nature”. The great scientific success of the network is reflected in 55 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals, so far.
