EMMA archives mouse mutant resources by cryopreservation and makes them accessible to users of the German Mouse Clinic, members of the NGFN and to the biomedical research community. By providing its cryopreservation service EMMA ensures the long-term availability of mouse mutant resources and thereby facilitates the exploitation of the mouse mutants generated within the NGFN to their full extent. The German EMMA node is part of the EMMA network which is comprised of 14 partners from 11 countries that operate as the primary mouse repository in Europe and that provide centralized access to a strongly growing collection of mouse mutants and associated data resources for the biomedical research community. In addition, EMMA generates germ-free (axenic) mice and offers excellent training opportunities in cryopreservation techniques. To date, 2310 mouse mutant lines were submitted to EMMA and a total of 2117 orders for EMMA resources were obtained. During the previous funding period 1121 mouse mutant lines were ordered from EMMA either as live mice of frozen material (157 of which from Germany). In the current phase of the project the German EMMA node will distribute up to 40 mutant mouse lines and archive up to 100 lines.
