The aim of the network „Functional Genomics of Parkinson’s disease“ is the identification of genes involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease as well as the functional analysis of the associated signal transduction pathways. To this end, physicians, biologists and computer scientists of 16 subprojects work hand in hand, supported by the central project management.

The scientific coordinating office (SCO) is mainly responsible for the efficient exchange of information, data and material between the subprojects, the subproject leaders and the project executing organization (PT at the DLR) and the NGFN office, respectively.

The SCO also organizes regular meetings of all collaborators of the Parkinson-network. During these meetings the recent results as well as the future work of every subproject is presented and discussed.  Furthermore, additional cooperation and the support by other subprojects are established. This concerns not only the exchange of samples or biological material, but also technical know-how and the use of specialized equipment.

The network-meetings, periodic reports and telephone conferences all ensure the continuous supervision of the scientific progress of each subproject by the network coordinator Prof. Gasser.

An additional task of the central SCO is the support of all network partners in administrative duties like reporting and finances. The SCO supervises the compliance of the annual reports with the formal guidelines and assures the timely submission to the project executing organization. Furthermore, the SCO assists the project leaders in financial matters, for instance by communicating with the project executing organization and the local administration.

Over the period of the project term the international scientific conferences „Functional Genomics of Parkinson’s disease“ and „Functional Genomics of Parkinson’s disease and beyond“ where held in 2010 and 2013 in Tübingen.
Due to these conferences not only the projects and success of the Parkinson-network gained international recognition, but also invaluable cooperation with renowned scientists all over the world could be initiated.
